Stealth Pilots: 5 All-Black Breitling Watches

Black-on-black watches have been a popular category for the last several years, and Breitling has created more than its share of these “stealth” timepieces, for its popular pilots’ watch collections as well as other families, like its Superocean dive watches and even the automotive-inspired Breitling for Bentley models. Here are five all-black Breitling watches, including an all-new model in the Breitling Avenger collection.

The Breitling Avenger Seawolf Blacksteel is a professional-grade divers’ watch whose case — made of steel and blackened by means of a highly-resistant carbon-based treatment — is water-resistant to the extreme depth of 3,000 meters. The watch is powered by Breitling’s Caliber 17, and has a screw-locked crown and rotating divers’ bezel. The dial, in what Breitling refers to as “volcano black,” echoes the ebony look of the case. The white hands and indices contrast with the dial, aiding in legibility when the wearer is deep beneath the waves. There are two strap options, Breitling’s perforated “Ocean Racer” style or its rubber Diver Pro, with a raised central ridge. The Breitling Avenger Seawolf Blacksteel is a limited edition of 1,000 pieces, priced at $4,720. More info and photos of the watch can be found here.

The case of the Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute Blacksteel, 43 mm in diameter and water-resistant to 30 meters, was blackened using the same process as on the Avenger Seawolf Blacksteel. The dial echoes the case’s black color, while white numerals and hands, coated with luminescent material, and small red hands for the chronograph counters provide contrast. Like that of its historical predecessor — famously worn by astronaut Scott Carpenter when he became the second American to orbit the Earth in 1962 — the new Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute’s dial features a circular slide rule, operated by the bezel, that enables its wearer to make various useful calculations and proclaims the model’s origins as a practical timepiece for pilots. The manual-wind movement, Breitling’s manufacture Caliber B02, powers a 1/4-second chronograph function with 30-minute and 12-hour counters; a date indication; and small seconds. A limited edition of 1,000 pieces, the Cosmonaute has a caseback bearing the Aurora mission insignia and retails for $9,590. More info and photos here.

The Breitling for Bentley 6.75 Midnight Carbon is a deep black tribute to the biggest Bentley engine, the famous 6.75-liter version that powers Bentley’s Mulsanne limousines. The watch’s satin-brushed steel case (49 mm in diameter) sports a special, ultra-resistant carbon-based DLC treatment and a knurled bezel inspired by Bentley’s famous radiator grilles. The dial has a vertical openworked motif that offers a glimpse of the watch’s movement, Breitling’s automatic Caliber 44B, which powers a 1/8-second chronograph, as well as a distinctive “large aperture calendar” which displays the date via two apertures — one for the tens and the other for the units — for maximum legibility. The Midnight Carbon — a limited edition of 1,000 pieces — is priced at $10,945. More details and photos here.

The Breitling Super Avenger Military Limited Series has a 48-mm case with an ultra-resistant, carbon-based black coating and finished with a glare-resistant treatment. The “volcano black” dial features a 24-hour military time display with white Arabic numerals. The curved sapphire crystal above the dial has also been treated with glare-resistant coating. This rugged military watch comes on Breitling’s “offroader” strap, made of a durable synthetic fabric similar to the type used by elite military units for special operations. The watch is equipped with a 1/4-second chronograph with a flyback function. The chronograph push-pieces are protected by two screwed-in push-piece guards and the crown is also screw-locked, with a non-slip grip. The large hands, hour markers, and numerals were designed for maximum legibility. The ratcheted bezel rotates in one direction, and the case is water-resistant to 300 meters. The Breitling Super Avenger Military is limited to 500 pieces, priced at $7,400. Click here for more specs and photos.

Last summer, Breitling introduced the Breitling Avenger Blackbird, an all-black Breitling watch whose 48-mm case is made of lightweight-but-robust titanium and coated with a carbon-based treatment. The case has a slimmer, more ergonomic profile than other Breitling Avenger watches, accented by the inward-curving lugs. The hands and hour markers are extra-large and treated with luminescent coating that stands out against the black dial in low-light conditions. The big, screw-locked crown has a non-slip grip, and the ratcheted bezel rotates in one direction. The case has a glareproof, curved sapphire crystal and is water-resistant to 300 meters. The automatic movement, Breitling Caliber 17,  like all Breitling watch movements, is COSC-certified as a chronometer. The Breitling Avenger Blackbird comes on a military-style canvas strap and is priced at $5,105.

Baselworld 2015 Preview: The Breitling Replica Chronoliner Takes Flight

Breitling Replica Montbrillant Watches UK looks to be emphasizing its history in 2015, with a number of watches that highlight the brand’s heritage in tool watches and precision timing devices. Sometimes that means revamping or reissuing classic models – one of which we’ve recently discussed here. But it can also mean introducing a new line that harks back to vintage design elements and a classic functionality. In that vein, Breitling gives us a new collection: the Breitling Chronoliner.

The Breitling Chronoliner is intended as a pilots’ watch, but maybe not how you’d think of that category most often. Whereas pilots’ watches today are usually designed to emphasize the more technical aspects of aviation, Breitling links the Chronoliner to the golden age of flight and the expansion of commercial air travel in the middle of the 20th century. In a statement, the brand dubs it “the authentic flight captain’s watch.” Breitling also says the watch was inspired by models of the 1950s and ’60s: although its dial is somewhat quieter, it does bear a resemblance to certain Navitimer Cosmonaute models.

Breitling Chronoliner - Soldier 560

The Chronoliner is a GMT chronograph. It has a center-mounted 24-hour hand that tapers very subtly towards its red arrow-shaped tip. A third time zone can be read off the 24-hour bezel in black ceramic, which is resistant to scratching. The bezel rotates in two directions and is easy to grip. A 30-minute totalizer is at 12 o’clock and a 12-hour totalizer sits at 6 o’clock; running seconds are at 9 o’clock. All three of these subdials have an off-white backing (making them stand out from the white, luminous hands and hour indexes) and bank slightly at the flange. The date, in white-on-black, is at 3 o’clock.

At the heart of the Chronoliner is Breitling’s Caliber 24. As you might guess from the subdial layout, Caliber 24 uses the ETA Valjoux 7750 as its base movement. It beats at 28,800 vph and has 25 jewels. Like all Breitling movements, it is COSC-certified. Caliber 24 may already be familiar to Breitling Replica  Navitimer UK regulars: it also crops up in the Navitimer World.

You won’t get a look at the movement through the case, though. The Chronoliner has a solid caseback, bearing a stylized image of two airplanes. The case is made of stainless steel with a diameter of 46 mm. The curved sapphire crystal glass has nonreflective coating on both sides. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters.

The watch comes on one of two different Replica Breitling Super Avenger UK  bracelets: either the seven-link Navitimer bracelet or the steel mesh Ocean Classic, as seen here. Look for the Chronoliner later this year. Pricing is available upon request.

Sand Dude: Testing the Breitling Replica Superocean UK

The modern Breitling Replica Superocean UK is built to withstand the rigors of sea, surf and sand. See how it fares in WatchTime’s Breitling Superocean test, conducted by writer Alexander Krupp and photographer Nik Schölzel, and originally presented in this feature from our December 2010 issue.

The first Breitling Superocean model, introduced in 1957, was water-resistant to 200 meters. The newest version of the watch, which Breitling unveiled at Baselworld in 2010, has a water-resistance level of 1,500 meters. Even though it can be worn at depths to which only professional divers can sink — the watch even has a helium-release valve, for use in a diving chamber — we’re guessing that most of its owners will think of it as an all-purpose sports watch for everyday wear. It is in that context that we tested the watch.

There is much to praise about the Breitling Superocean, starting with its case, 42 mm in diameter, which has several features that are standard for the Breitling brand: a smoothly ratcheting bezel, high-quality polishing, and an elaborate logo embossed on the caseback. The bezel, which rotates in only one direction, is fitted with a distinctive, molded-rubber ring insert in which four numerals and eight indexes, all satin-finished, have been smoothly inlaid. The finishing is impeccable. The rubber tends to attract dust, and the metal markers and polished case sides quickly show scratches, but Breitling Replica  Emergency could not have prevented these problems.

Breitling Superocean - reclining

The Breitling Superocean watch is easy to operate. The bezel and crown guards pose little hindrance when the wearer unlocks the large, fluted, screw-down crown, and the crown engages nicely in its two positions. The crown stem is very sturdy and does not move at all when the crown is pulled out. The watch’s movement, the ETA 2824, has a hack mechanism and a quick-date-set feature. The pronounced fluting on the bezel means the wearer can turn it easily, even when wearing gloves. The bezel ratchets smoothly in half-minute increments.

The dial has pluses and minuses. The three oversized markers at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, the wide hands and the extremely large, slanted numerals give the watch a dynamic appearance. The large numerals and markers do, however, make the dial look crowded, and the wide bezel, which reduces the dial’s size and visual impact, contributes to this effect. The date window, which serves as an hour marker at 3 o’clock, is nicely placed and its size is compatible with those of the other hour markers. Reading the date can nonetheless be hard because the numerals on the date ring are quite thin. The problem is worst for the numerals 10 through 19 because the 1 is very close to the date window’s edge.

Breitling Superocean - profile

The time is generally easy to read on this version of the Breitling Replica Super Avenger, even though the minute hand does not extend to the minute track. Because the markers and hands are so big, they provide plenty of space for luminous coating and thus shine brightly in the dark. Divers can make sure the watch is still running by looking at the seconds hand, whose luminous tip makes it visible in dark and murky water. The bezel isn’t as handy for timing a dive as it could be, though, because  it does not have a luminous dot to indicate the start of the dive (in fact none of the bezel markers is luminous). Nor does the bezel have minute markers within each five-minute increment, so timing a dive to the minute involves some guesswork.

Breitling Replica Super Avenger UK Military Limited Series

Breitling describes its Super Avenger Military Limited Series watch as “a concentrated blend of power, precision, and functionality.” The “power” part undoubtedly refers to the new watch’s case, which is made of steel covered with an ultra-resistant, carbon-based black coating. The “precision” and “functionality” most likely refer to this Super Avenger’s COSC-certified chronometer movement, Caliber 22.

The Breitling Replica Super Avenger Military, which is a limited edition of 500 pieces, is built for stealth, with a non-reflective finish on the big, 48-mm case and a “volcano black” dial that echoes the case and features a 24-hour military time display with white Arabic numerals. The curved sapphire crystal above the dial has also been treated with glare-resistant coating. Further solidifying the model as a military watch is its “offroader” strap, made of a durable synthetic fabric similar to the type used by elite military units for special operations.

This tough Replica Breitling Chronomat Evolution Watches is equipped with a 1/4-second chronograph, which has a flyback function and tallies 30 minutes and 12 hours on two subdials at 9 o’clock and 6 o’clock, respectively. The chronograph push-pieces are protected by two screwed-in push-piece guards and the crown is also screw-locked, with a non-slip grip. The large hands, hour markers, and numerals were designed for maximum legibility. The ratcheted bezel rotates in one direction, a useful feature for diving; the case is water-resistant to 300 meters (1,000 feet). As with all Breitling Replica Emergency Watches, the Super Avenger Military contains a COSC chronometer-certified movement, Caliber 22, which features automatic winding and a frequency of 28,800 vph.
